Over the weekend of May 8–10, the volunteer “Loutraki Divers” came to Hydra Island, at the invitation of the municipality, to clean the harbor of debris that’s been accumulating for decades. In three days of diving, they managed to remove more than 4,600 kilos of rubbish, including plastic, glass, boat batteries and fittings, tires, fenders, and more, even a street sweepers cart that likely blew into the harbor at some point during a storm.
This wonderful ecological initiative was accomplished with the participation of the Hydra Municipality and the Municipal Port Hydra Fund, the Loutraki Divers, the Greek Union of Marine Environment, and the Port Authority Hydra.
Though much debris has been removed, as it has been accumulating for decades, there remains much cleaning to be done. The municipality intends to continue the trend toward cleansing Hydra’s harbor of all pollutants and contaminants.
