A wave splashes over Kamini Harbor in winter
Winter on Hydra starts late by northern standards, and throughout December and even January, you can find yourself in a T-shirt and shorts. In general, however, it’s jeans, jacket, and even coat weather, and January and February are wet, windy, and stormy, requiring heaters or a fire in the hearth for those with fireplaces. Boats often don’t run due to high seas, and most businesses, aside from grocery stores, bakeries, municipal offices, the post, and a few cafes and restaurants, are closed. Still, the atmosphere is cozy. Writers and painters have settled down for a winter’s work, and the locals are relaxing after a long hard summer.
