HydraArk’s 2014 TNR Sessions

May TNR session on Hydra

Between May 9 and 11, vets returned to Hydra for another very successful TNR session in which 62 street cats were spayed or neutered. The vets also performed a lot of treatment for the animals’ well-being, such as much-needed teeth cleanings to prevent gingivitis and other infections. A number of the female cats had been given oral birth control and as a result had infected wombs, requiring complete hysterectomies. There was also a cat with severe skin cancer on its ears, as well as abscesses in its mouth, and the vet performed an auriculectomy (ear removal) and extracted most of the animal’s teeth. It will still be able to eat and lives in a neighborhood where it will get continuing care. In addition, a number of cats were treated for infected eyes. All in all, it was a rewarding session!

The other good news is that we’re starting to get a lot of very positive feedback from tourists and other animal welfare workers who comment on the generally good condition of the cats. This is a wonderful improvement over previous years, where the situation has been the opposite. We can only thank the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust for the funding to make this possible, the Hydra municipality for providing a venue for the clinic and storage space for our equipment, and our guest vets, particularly veterinary nurse Carol McBeth, without whom Hydra’s (and, indeed, Greece’s) homeless animals would not be in nearly such good shape these days and who keep us on track with their dedication!

March TNR session on Hydra

HydraArk, Hydra’s animal welfare society, held its spring TNR session, conducted in cooperation with the Hydra Demos and funded by the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, over the weekend of March 21-23. It was a great success, with 55 cats spayed or neutered, as well as critical emergency medical care provided for four cats. Three private owners also brought their cats in for veterinary consultations. HydraArk wishes to thank both the demos and Marchig, as well as veterinary nurse Carol McBeth and veterinarian Amalia, not to mention its heroically hard-working volunteers!

HydraArk intends to hold its next session during the weekend of May 9-11. We’ll let you know as plans unfold.
