Agia Evpraxia

The Convent of St. Evpraxia is just below the Monastery of Profita Ilias, at an altitude of about 500 meters, with magnificent views, among pine trees and cypress trees. Facing the Profita Ilias’s entrance, walk to the right toward the threshing floor. You will see a gate and steps leading down through an arched doorway. The path continues on down to the convent. It was built in 1819 and from the beginning served as a nunnery. The small temple was built in 1829 by Father Ierotheos Dokos, who dedicated the Monastery to Saint Euphrax.

While the convent’s grounds provide spectacular views of the island, its inner courtyard has the peaceful atmosphere of a sanctuary. The convent’s chapel houses an icon of a saint reputed to have miraculous powers. The ossouary is the resting place of the remains of Iacovos Tombsis, Hydra’s first admiral

The Holy Monastery has been well-known for its obedience, philanthropies, spirituality, and the industry of the nuns living there. Their woven fabrics have been well-known. Today three nuns live in the Holy Monastery, and you can see and buy very beautiful hand-made items in the enclosure.
