\nThe name “Apokreas” derivies from the Greek phrase Apoxh apo kreas\, literally meaning “goodbye to meat.”
\n
Carnivale in Kamini Harbor
Simila rly\, the word “carnivale” derives from the Latin carne\, meaning “meat\,” and vale\, meaning “goodbye.” Originally a pagan feast marking the advent of spring and a celebration of fertility and the fecund ity of nature\, today Apokreas marks the beginning of the Greek Orthodox L ent\, a period during which many observers abstain from meat and dairy as well as oil.
\n
Revelers on parade
As Apokreas marks the beginning of Lent\, it is a “moveable feast”\; in other words\, like Easter\, its date is not fixed according to the civil calend ar. Held on the Sunday before Clean Monday\, or Kathara Dtheftera\, the be ginning of Lent\, Carnivale constitutes the last big party before the peri od of abstention. Locals don costumes and join a procession that leads fro m the center of Hydra Town\, along the coast road to Kamini\, and back to Hydra Town along the inland route. The party stops at various prearranged points along the way for complementary mezes (nibbles) and wine\, and once the procession has reached its final destination\, typically at Douskos T averna\, the party continues with traditional music and dancing into the w ee hours.
\nOn the next day\, Clean Monday\, o r Kathera Deftera\, Greeks enjoy a feast of predominantly fish and oth er nonmeat dishes. Weather permitting\, locals also spend the afternoon fl ying kites.

Clean Monday (Καθαρά Δευτέρα) marks the beginning of
Lent in the Greek Orthodox Church.
Following on the heels of Sunda y’s Carnival festiv ities (and perhaps indulgences)\, the day traditionally entails eating onl y seafood and vegetable dishes (considered “pure” foods) and abstaining fr om meat (hence the overall holiday name Apokreas\, or “Farewell t o meat”). You’ll also see families flying kites up in the hill or anywhere they can catch wind.

On March 25\, Greeks celebrate the Greek National Anniversary\, a m
ajor religious holiday with military parades in the larger towns and citie
s\, celebrating Greece’s victory in the war of Independence against the Tu
rks\, who had occupied the country for 400 years.
Hydriots celebra te with a parade along the port front of the local schoolchildren dressed in traditional folk costume and marching to the beat of their own drums. ( Residents will be well aware of the approaching festivities as the kids be gin practicing their drumming skills about a week before the event.)
\nTraditional Greek dancing by the older schoolchildren follows the parad e.
\nIn the days before this national holiday\, the Greeks’ versi on of Labor Day\, locals traditionally gather colorful wild spring flowers from the hillsides and fashion them into wreaths\, a tradition that grew out of the ancient Greek “Festival of the Flowers\,” celebrating Persephon e’s annual return from Hades and the arrival of spring.
\n
A typical May Day wreath
\nYou ’ll see them decorating many front doors and entrances. Many flower festiv als take place all over the country. The day itself it typically spent wit h friends and family over a long taverna lunch\, with singing and dancing and general merrymaking.
\n\n
May Day is generally celebrated on the 1st of May\, even though it is now associated with a bank holiday for workers hence it also being known as Labour Day\, but on Hydra \, is c elebrated with enthusiasm.
\n\n
On the rare occasions that Gr eek Easter Sunday falls on or near 1st May\, the more ancient\, somewhat p agan holiday “Festival of the Flowers” may be delayed or rescheduled.
\n\n
Since May Day corresponds with the peak of the flower seaso n in Hydra you will find May wreaths\, made with flowers gathered from the hills of Hydra\, decorating shops\, homes\, doorways\, balconies\, in cha pels\, and many other places.
\n\n
The banks\, post office an d municipal offices are closed on the 1st of May. If the 1st happens to la nd on a Friday or Monday\, anyone wanting to travel to or from Hydra that weekend would be advised to book their dolphin ticket early!
